Germany Calls for Diplomacy as Israel-Iran Tensions Escalate Again

(MENAFN) Germany on Monday urged Israel and Iran to reduce tensions and return to diplomatic negotiations following a renewed flare-up in their conflict.

Speaking at a press briefing in Berlin, government spokesman Stefan Kornelius said all parties should work toward lowering tensions and pursuing political solutions rather than further military escalation.

He stated: “to de-escalate and advance diplomatic solutions, which have, after all, been under negotiation for quite some time now. That is the German government's position.”

Kornelius also reaffirmed Berlin’s backing for efforts by US President Donald Trump to secure an agreement with Iran.

At the same briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Josef Hinterseher emphasized that negotiations remain the only viable path to resolving the crisis.

“A lasting resolution to the conflict can only be achieved through negotiations. I believe there is consensus on this, and in our view, the talks between Iran and the United States must not be jeopardized by the current situation. This is a prerequisite for reaching a diplomatic solution,” he said.

The renewed tensions followed developments on Sunday, when Israeli strikes hit Beirut despite an existing ceasefire. Iran subsequently launched missiles toward northern Israel, prompting Israel to carry out multiple rounds of airstrikes against Iranian targets.
