US Vice President Vows Commitment to Prevent Iran from Acquiring Nuclear Arms

(MENAFN) US Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday that Iran will not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon, stressing that diplomacy is the preferred approach of the Trump administration while leaving open the option of other measures if necessary.

Speaking in an interview on Fox News, Vance said President Donald Trump has been as "crystal clear as he could be. Iran can't have a nuclear weapon."

"That would be the ultimate military objective, if that's the route that he chose. That is, of course, what we're trying to accomplish, as the president said, through the preferred route of diplomacy. But it's very simple. We have to get to a position where Iran, the largest state sponsor of terrorism in the world, cannot threaten the world with nuclear terrorism," he added.

Vance highlighted that preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons is widely supported by Americans and described it as a critical national and global security concern. He noted that while diplomatic talks are ongoing, Trump has shown readiness to employ alternative tools if required.

Trump is "going to try to accomplish it diplomatically," Vance said, adding that the president has "a number of other tools at his disposal to ensure this doesn't happen."
A third round of indirect nuclear negotiations between the US and Iran, mediated by Oman, is scheduled in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday. Vance expressed hope that Iran will approach these talks "seriously."

When asked if this could involve action against Iran’s supreme leader, he refrained from speculating, emphasizing that Trump will ultimately decide the necessary steps to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
