Beijing Calls for Restraint as US-Iran Tensions Mount

(MENAFN) China reiterated Thursday its appeal for de-escalation and diplomacy between Washington and Tehran, as a significant U.S. military buildup continues to reshape the strategic landscape of the Persian Gulf.

"We are closely following developments in Iran," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning told reporters in Beijing.

When pressed on whether China would align with Russia in backing Iran against potential U.S. military action, Mao drew a firm but measured line.

"China advocates the resolution of issues through political and diplomatic channels and opposes the use of threat or force in international affairs," she said.

Mao also underscored the depth of China's ties with Tehran: "Chinese and Iranian people are traditionally friendly. China supports the Iranian government and people in safeguarding (their) legitimate rights, interests, and national stability."

Emphasizing Beijing's preference for a peaceful resolution, she added: "We hope all sides … exercise restraint and solve disputes through dialogue."

"China is ready to continue play its constructive role as a responsible major country," Mao said.

The remarks came as Iran and the U.S. prepare for a third round of indirect negotiations brokered by Oman, scheduled to take place in Geneva, Switzerland. The nuclear diplomacy track was revived last month, spurred in part by mediation efforts from regional actors including Türkiye.

The diplomatic push unfolds against a tense military backdrop, with Washington maintaining a substantial force presence in the Persian Gulf while Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps conducts a series of parallel military exercises.
